Sealing and Protecting

At  Set In Stone Restoration  our experts service commercial and residential clients throughout the San Diego area with the right kind of stone, tile and grout protection treatments for their unique needs.

About Sealing

Most natural stone is porous and some stone types, such as marble, are calcite based and are acid sensitive, which means they may become etched when coming in contact with acids. For porous stone you want to fill those tiny holes to protect it from staining agents being able to penetrate. For acid sensitive stone, you may require a protective barrier between not only staining agents, but acidic substances and your stone. Clay tiles and pavers require other types of sealers, and grout requires a different kind of sealer to inhibit stains.

A good quality impregnating sealer gives you time to clean up spills before they become stains. Anti-etch treatments provide an invisible barrier to protect acid sensitive stone from etching.

The right kind of sealer is determined by several things, including the type of material, where it is located, and what you want the look to be. At Set In Stone Restoration be assured that we only use the very highest quality, professional sealing and protection products on the market today, and we are happy to consult with you on the type of protection you need for your natural stone or tile surfaces.

Impregnating Sealer

The primary job of an impregnating sealer is to fill in the tiny pores in natural stone to inhibit staining agents from being able to leave a stain on your natural stone surfaces.

The special penetrating sealer molecules in the impregnating sealer we use are smaller than lower quality sealers and penetrate deep into the pore structure, even dense natural stones like granite. Inside the pores the special sealing molecules bond by chemical reactions, creating a substantial, deep oil and water-repellent barrier.

Our sealer is safe for use on food preparation surfaces and not sensitive to most common household acidic substances. The result is semi-permanent and provides optimum sealing capabilities protecting against oil and water based staining agents.

Color Enhancing Sealers

Color enhancing sealers are a type of sealing product that not only provide outstanding protection against stains and spills, but also enhance the natural colors of certain types of natural stone such as slate, travertine, and flagstone.

These sealers work by penetrating deep into the pores of the stone and intensifying its natural hues, bringing out their full beauty and vibrancy. One of the most notable benefits of color enhancing sealers is that they can provide a wet-look finish on natural stones which otherwise appears only when the stone is wet.

Therefore, if you are someone who appreciates the natural color variations in your natural stone surface, enhancing sealer is the perfect option for you. It is an excellent solution for those who want to enhance the look of their natural stone surfaces while also ensuring they remain well-protected from everyday wear and spills.

Other Types of Sealers

Anti-etch Protection

While impregnating sealers are great for protecting stone from stains, they don’t protect acid sensitive stone from etching. Etching happens when an acidic substances like lemons, coffee, and wine come in contact with the stone surface and actually causes physical damage to the surface, resulting in dull, sometimes whitish, rough spots.

For acid-sensitive stone counters, bar tops, table tops, etc. (e.g. marble, onyx, travertine) we offer state-of-the-art solutions to protect the stone from etching as well as protecting from stains.

Grout Color Sealing

Grout color sealing offers significant benefits by enhancing both the appearance and durability of tiled surfaces. This process provides a uniform and revitalized look, making your grout lines appear cleaner and more consistent. It also protects grout from stains, dirt, mold, and mildew by creating a barrier against moisture and spills, which makes cleaning much easier. Additionally, color sealing prevents discoloration and extends the life of the grout by reducing the risk of cracking and crumbling due to water penetration.
